At Southlake Pediatrics, Inc., we consider it both a great joy and responsibility to care for children. Most of us are parents ourselves, so we strive to be understanding and available to the families we are privileged to serve. We are honored that you have chosen us as your child's primary medical provider and are confident that you will be pleased with the quality of care and service that we can provide you and your family.

A vital part of our service to children begins with our outstanding staff who works hard to manage and maintain a professional, caring and supportive environment for our patients in a timely manner. Our doctors are lifelong learners. Not only have they received advanced medical training in pediatrics, they continually pursue ongoing education to stay abreast of the latest in child health care.

Dr. McCown was born in Anderson, South Carolina. He graduated from Clemson University in 1980 with a B.S. degree in Zoology. He then attended the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and graduated from there in 1985 where he earned a M.D. degree. Dr. McCown then completed his internship in Pediatrics at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia in 1986. He completed his residency in Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1988, and moved from there to Iowa City, Iowa where he joined Pediatric Associates of Iowa City. In 1992 Dr. McCown moved to Birmingham where he has enjoyed living and practicing since then. He has been certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics since 1988.


Dr. Winkler graduated from Milligan College in 1984 with a B.S. degree in Biology and Mathematics. She went on to obtain a Masters Degree in Mathematics from the University of South Carolina in 1986 and subsequently taught college mathematics. She then attended medical school at the University of South Carolina and completed her MD degree in 1991. Dr. Winkler completed her internship and residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1994. She subsequently went on to pursue training in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham

She completed this training in 1997 and moved to Lexington, Kentucky where she was an Assistant Professor in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine from 1997 – 2000. In 2000 Dr. Winkler returned to Birmingham and went on to lead the Pediatric Critical Care Division at the Children’s Hospital of Alabama. She is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a Fellow of the Society for Critical Care Medicine. She loves living in Birmingham and is excited about joining Southlake Pediatrics as she transitions into the primary care setting for the next phase of her career.


Dr. Patti Schroder completed her Bachelor of Science in 1987 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham while on scholarship for Division 1 intercollegiate Volleyball. She earned her MD degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1991. In 1994 she completed her Pediatric Internship and Residency at UAB and Children’s Hospital of Alabama. After serving as a Co-Chief Resident of the UAB Pediatric Program 1994-95, she stayed on faculty at the UAB School of Medicine while helping establish and work at the UAB Faculty Pediatrics Outpatient Clinic. Since that time she has continued to be Board Certified in Pediatrics and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has enjoyed serving as a General Pediatrician for Shelby County and surrounding areas for the past 26 years. She is excited about continuing to provide excellent care for her patients in this next phase of her career which has begun by joining the excellent staff at Southlake Pediatrics.
